This year, I'm making a conscious decision to center my lens on the celebration of Black joy. In a world that often overlooks the richness and vibrancy of Black experiences, I believe it's essential to shine a spotlight on the moments of triumph, laughter, and sheer brilliance that define Black joy.

Inspired by legendary Black photographers like Gordon Parks, James Van Der Zee and Carrie Mae Weems, I’ve always admired how they used their art to tell powerful stories and capture the essence of Black life. Parks’ images of everyday life and social justice, and Weems’ explorations of family relationships and cultural identity, have deeply influenced my approach to photography. Their work has shown me the importance of preserving our stories and legacies through the lens.

Additionally, I’ve been profoundly moved by the modern wave of social media accounts dedicated to sharing old family photographs. These images showcase the everyday joys, celebrations, and intimate moments of Black families throughout the decades. Seeing these snapshots of life – birthday parties, family reunions, Sunday dinners – reminded me of the importance of preserving our stories for future generations.

The Summer of Black Joy Photography Project is my way of contributing to this legacy.

• Session Details: Sessions are 30 minutes long and will take place at agreed-upon locations.

• Weddings, elopements, baby showers, headshots/commerical projects and corporate events will not be considered.
